Success Story of Luches’ Family

Ethiopia, Oromia Regional State, East Wollega Zone, Nekemte, Negassa 02 Kebele (sub city)

Luche Wagari, 45 years old, mother of 4 girls (onemarried, one dropped school due to poverty, one at school and doing excellent work at grade 7 this year, additionally taking care of a grandchild after her daughter has divorced her alcoholic husband and currently lives at her mum’s small room as dependent)

Luche is a strong lady, hard worker with big responsibility to care for the family by bring up her children and grandchildren from the income she is generating from the sale of firewood. Her husband is a daily laborer besides looking after his cows (4 with the new cuff). The cow produces enough milk 3 liters a day. Husband is a shepherd now and Luche tells him what to do.

They are 6 in the family. The room is 3m x 4m, dust floor, mud plastered (see to the photo), all are healthy. The baby is so unclean and stinking and my staff had long time with her in helping her (teaching) how to clean a baby in a bad condition (baby care without a diaper). All are smiling. They offered us tea outside door because we did not get enough place in the house with the family.  We heard from neighbor that, Luche run to the nearest village and bought 9 pcs of creamed bread each at Birr 15. That is the power in for sharing in love unlimited we observed.

  • They have a plan

  • To build a new house to accommodate her all family members.

  • Purchase a bigger filed for grazing land and production of kitchen garden.

  • Support her daughter at least finish high school.

success stories

Chaltu Tolera (former street girl and now a midwife nurse with reputation)

This girl has a touching story from her background. She was brought up in a desperate family with very poor living conditions.  She has two brothers and two sisters all above 20 years old. She is dependent on an Old father and mother above 80 years old. They all live in an old grass roofed not plastered wall & extremely old little hat. Unable to maintain family living and educate their children due to age related diseases, hunger and inability to farm.

Chaltu hence decided to do firewood selling, hair splitting and dressing, cooking for someone at lower wages and interring into the circle of prostitution to earn for living and support the big size family.  She had school education up to 11th grade. Thinking about furtherance of education needs was a troubling case which as it is difficult for her to continue her education which brought her into depression, illness and social and economical disturbances. Fortunately, she was a committed Christian in prayers continuously which encouraged her to visit Garuma Social Association office in Nekemte.  She brought her resumes, support letters from district government offices, three witnesses and luckily admitted into the program to study nursing course at the New Generation for three years.

After completion she was employed by the Oromia Regional Health Bureau to take up a job at the district in Kiramu Woreda health centre as a nurse in charge of the OB & GYN ward. She becomes popular by delivering over a thousand women in a year in the village. She was additionally trained midwife with better earning & higher post. Now she is called * a mother of many women*. She is paid good salary + top up+ over time+ position allowance which helped her to send back her brother and sister to school and she also built a new house for the family.

Chaltu attended the Garuma Social Development Association General Assembly meeting held January 14, 2017 as life witness. It was a great joy and an attendant fall on tears at the Assembly and is a big reward for the members at large.

Thanks is due to Rotary Club Osterholz in Germany who relentlessly is supporting girls with education and we strongly value the effort leading to change in many ways ruled by Sustainable Development Goal directions of the global mission.

  • Almaz Yadessa (a 16 years young paralyzed girl rolling on the ground                                                                                         since childhood)Three years ago her father brought her from a village & dropped her in the street of Nekemte town at night and disappeared. She found herself in tears, cried no one to listen to her, and ended up in begging to survive. She was on the street day and night without shelter. This girl has not been to school, no mother, in the village it is a curse and taboo to have such a girl. We tried to trace the whereabouts of her family all in vain. She is smiling, happy and always enjoying, everybody cares for her now.  What a wonderful mission to invest on education for the needy. Great work Rotarian

  • Firewood sellers (there are over 300 women firewood sellers around Nekemte town)                                                               GSDA has set up a strategy whereby we donate female donkey to each with tree plantation and chicken rearing support. The donkey is to help them loose workload on them, make better earning from the sell, rent donkeys when they are doing other works at home & earn same amount of money, husband could also replace them to transport the wood to town . This scheme went well and families living in poor conditions are improved very well. Family nutrition increased, garden developed, children to schools, colleges and even universities. Some mothers support their children at universities with a monthly pocket allowances for their children up to $USA20/month. The donkeys gave birth, planted over a  thousand – three thousand plants of commercial coffee, eucalyptus trees and other exotic and indigenous trees , renovated houses or built a new , dropped firewood selling and diverted their business to grain selling, learned saving at bank and iqubs, chicken, milking cows,  and other many outcomes.

  • Two towns clean water supply February – March 2017 Rotary Clubs in Germany;-This year 2016/17 we mainly focused ( Rotary club Germany) feeding the people of Uke town (population 30,000) & Arjo Gudetu town (with 35,000 people) are targeted to supply clean water in partnership with East Wollega zone Water, Mineral and Energy office. Currently the people have already started enjoying the clean water as pipelines are extended and main reservoirs are assembled to improve their health status against water borne diseases affecting the lives of many dwellers in these both towns.  On the parallel many other schools and town also got hand pumps and springs protected which will add up the number of beneficiaries to over 200,000 populations.
